Tree of Life poster, printed by Degree, this seems to be another of those special images where it makes you look twice before you realise just how pretty it really is, lithograph is one of my favourite prints.

Here are some product shots I did for the Bittersweet Tour last weekend. It’s my first attempt at doing this kind of thing with something I’ve designed. I think they came out ok for a first attempt.

I’d love you forever if you’d “appreciate” the project on Behance.

I love the colour scheme and the font on the top image, the light beams in the background are also a really pretty touch. Beer is also always a win.

Interview - Charlotte Pettley

I think the wonderful thing about Tumblr is the brilliant networking that the art and design community has set up on the platform, so when I came across the fabric works of Charlotte Pettley I was fascinated by how she must have come up with the images on these gorgeous pieces of fabric.

I had the pleasure of being able to ask Charlotte some more in depth questions about some of the technical side behind the works;

What was the main source of inspiration behind the Sweet Shop Nostalgia and the 1950’s Table Setting?

The main source of inspiration behind the Sweet Shop Nostalgia project was vintage sweet shops and the nostalgic feeling someone gets when they walk into one. I was also inspired by children’s illustrations.

The main source of inspiration behind the 1950’s Style Table Settings project was 1950’s style illustrations gathered from magazines and books including ‘Good House Keeping’ and ‘Esquires Handbook for Hosts’.

How did you decide which sweets you wanted to have as prints, was it just a matter of picking your favourite childhood treats?

The sweets that I chose to print were what I believed to be iconic. I also chose them because of their variation in colour and shape, which I found were the most interesting out of all the old style sweets I had researched.

Could you explain what some of your processes behind making one of your prints is?

There are two different methods of printing that I carry out: Silk-screen printing and Digital Printing.

My silk-screen prints are more hands on; I start with my illustrations, which I then transfer on to a silk-screen. I make up the print pastes myself, which include ‘procion’, ‘discharge’ and ‘pigment’. Once they are made up to the strength/colour that I am looking for I then place the screen with my design on onto my chosen fabric and pull the paste through leaving the print. Once dry, the samples are then steamed and washed according to the print paste used.

My digital prints are created through the use of photography. I take photographs of the object (s) that I am interested in and manipulate them on Adobe software, experimenting with form, size, colour and layering. These designs are then printed digitally onto fabric, and then steamed and washed.

Is there a lot of digital manipulation behind your work, or does it still have a big influence from the more handmade, physical side of things?

It varies for each project but I like to combine the two as I feel it shows the traditional side of printing as well as the technology side. It’s great that I have had the opportunity to learn both of these skills so I like to show that off in my work.

Personally my favourite piece is the Liberty’s comments printed onto the table cloth, which would be your favourite?

Thank you. The napkin designs are my favourite prints too!  I really enjoyed designing them; I was so interested in the variation of handwriting, illustrations and also the different languages that people had used.

What other artists have really spurred your work on and given you influence?

The artists/designers that have influenced my work are Julie Haslam; for her recipe designs on tea towels, napkins and board covers. Eleanor Pritchard; for her concept of objects being part of a table setting and her use of font on napkins. Deirdre Nelson for her concept of fusing traditional textile skills and contemporary reinterpretation though photography and digital manipulation. Cath Kidston for her vintage style fashion, interiors and product range.

Do you have any preferred styles to work in other than your printing? If it’s embroidery, weaving or something utterly different, tell us a little more about yourself.

I’ve recently got into appliqué! I just love experimenting with different shapes and words from various fabrics, combining them all and creating something totally new!

What do you feel is next for your work, can you give us any sneaky clues as to anything new and exciting that you have in the pipeline or does this series not feel finished?

I’m currently working on a Cushions Project for Belleville Boutique in London. I have decided to develop designs from the 1950’s Style Table Setting Project. The launch for the project will be in mid-September; the exact date hasn’t been confirmed yet but I will keep you updated.

I also have some freelance work with Wilkinson’s lined up, designing surfaces for some of their products, which I’m pretty excited about. It would be amazing to see my designs around stores nationwide!

Charlotte also has some hand-made fabric envelopes for special occasions, these are just lovely.

I for one am really excited to see what prints Charlotte comes up with for this Wilkinson’s commission! I will be keeping an eye on her blog and looking out for the new projects, she has such a beautiful eye for vibrant pinks and oranges that just instantly make me think of sweets and saccharine things.

She has a wonderful Tumblr and Twitter, you should check her out.

By LSDK, I always find really handmade looking print design just gorgeous, I also have a huge thing for wax seals on stationary and this black wax seal is so stylish and hipster it’s almost too cool.

From Hammerpress, I will get this for my house and perhaps add ‘and cake’ to it.

By Kris Atomic, I’ve seen this poster floating around Tumblr many times, but I’m so glad I found the actual maker, I think the image is brilliantly funny and just rather fitting for me!

By SORT Design, I actually bought this card from Cockpit Arts open studios yesterday, I couldn’t resist, it’s too cool. I doubt I’ll actually send it to anyone.
